Documtec and PlantSys joined kood/Sisu Hackathon

Sparking new ideas and insights

Documtec and PlantSys took part in a hackathon organized by kood/Sisu, where kood/Sisu Talents worked on solving a challenge related to industrial process data using the Elastic Cloud environment.

The hackathon encouraged participants to combine technical problem-solving with business and customer understanding. The evaluation emphasized solutions that utilized machine learning, artificial intelligence, or advanced Elastic features – technologies that also play a key role in the ongoing development of PlantSys.

Hackathon for industrial data utilization

AI at the center of the winning solution

The winning solution was developed independently by Vasilii Gulchak. He started with data upload but soon realized the need to look at the challenge from a broader perspective.

“On the first day, I got stuck after getting the data upload to work. On my way home, I thought about why I hadn’t made progress and decided to change my approach. I started to think about the product from a new angle – how could a large database be used in a bigger picture with smart tools,” says Vasilii Gulchak, kood/Sisu Talent.

After reflection, he started over with a clear new plan.

“I restarted and focused on the plant’s subsystems, visualized their behavior, and used automated analysis to detect anomalies by comparing past and recent data. I identified the causes, separated one-time issues from recurring ones, and proposed maintenance improvements using AI,” Vasilii continues.

“The winning solution placed maintenance at the core and combined AI-driven analytics with a concrete use case. This is definitely an idea we plan to further develop,” says Pyry Kovanen, Chief Technology Officer at PlantSys.

Hackathon brought new perspectives to development work

The hackathon offered concrete insights for product development at Documtec and PlantSys. Many of the solutions focused on efficient data analysis, anomaly detection, and maintenance optimization – all areas that directly impact operational efficiency and customer value.

“The core of the event was innovation. We were looking for new perspectives and ideas on how to utilize data, not a finished product,” says Laura Leskinen, Business Director at PlantSys.

“I recommend hackathons to any company looking for fresh ideas and a chance to challenge traditional ways of thinking,” Laura encourages.
